DuBois believed that African Americans should attack racism. He was involved in the founding of the NAACP, which took many cases of racial discrimination to court in an effort to get the nation to live up to the promises of the 13th and 14th Amendments.
Washington believed that African Americans should cooperate with whites and accept temporary segregation to get along with southern whites. He thought that racial equality would come gradually.
Booker T. Washington promoted a philosophy of self-help and racial unity. He suggested Blacks forget about racial discrimination for the moment and focus on raising themselves up by hard work and material prosperity. W.E.B Dubois, a black intellectual, held that Washingtonâ??s methods only served to perpetuate white oppression. He advocated civil rights and political action to bring about equality.
Booker T. Washington focused on having education for real life jobs and not asking for equality from the whites. He just focused on getting help from the whites and accepting their place as blacks on earth. W. E. B. Dubois focused on the exact opposite things that of Booker T. Washington. Dubois focused on blacks being book smart to get any where in life. It was a political strategy.
WEB Dubois and Booker T. Washington were both major leaders in the Civil Rights Movement. If WEB Dubois were to criticize Washington it may be that he felt that Washington was too narrow minded and holding back the blacks in America.

Martin Luther King Jr. was influenced by Booker T. Washington's autobiography titled Up From Slavery. He was influenced by W.E.B. DuBois because his father was involved with the NAACP which DuBois helped to start.

W.E.B. Dubois opposed the ideas of Booker T. Washington because he thought Washington accepted segregation while promoting economic advancement. Dubois felt that discrimination should be tackled head on with direct confrontation.
