Weaknesses of Abraham Lincoln

One major weakness of President Abraham Lincoln was allowing his wife Mary Todd to influence him to the point of making weak national policy. He also failed to sack his generals who were ineffective and propagated corruption in the army.

President Lincoln's main strength lay in his determination to end the Southern rebellion and once again have a united and powerful US. He did not succumb to pressures from War Democrats and Radical Republicans.On the downside, President Lincoln, much like his counter part in the South President Davis, took far too much control over strictly military operations. And, he was far to quick to criticize his generals that did not meet his expectations. Lincoln's role as th Commander in Chief is part of the US Constitution, however, on strictly military matters, he second guessed his top generals and in some cases broke the chain of command by personally directing generals who actually reported to senior generals of to the general in chief. There were three generals in chief in the Union's army. In a four year war, this may be considered too any changes.
