Ruby Bridges, a Louisiana woman who was made famous for being one of the first African-American students to attend an all-white school, is still alive. She is currently 55 years old, and is still speaks out against racism.
No, Ruby Bridges has not died. The little girl in 1960 was the first African-American to integrate the New Orleans school. She and several other children were picked to integrate the William Franz elementary school. The others either decided to stay home or were transferred to another school. Famous American painter, Norman Rockwell, was so inspired, he painted her going to school. She was born on September 8, 1954. Ruby Bridges, now Ruby Bridges Hall, still lives in New Orleans. For 15 years she worked as a travel agent, later becoming a full-time parent to her four sons. She is now chair of the Ruby Bridges Foundation, which she formed in 1999 to promote "the values of tolerance, respect, and appreciation of all differences." Once she entered the William Franz school, the white children were pulled out by their parents. Once Ruby was threatened by a white parent with poison. President Dwight D. Eisenhower dispatched U.S Marshals to protect her. Her lunch only came from home for the fear of poisoning the food. While attending school, she had her own tutor and a child psychologist. There were white families who were empathetic to her and family as they continued to send their children to the William Franz school and even one provided a job for her father. On January 8, 2001, Bridges was awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal by President Bill Clinton.
As of 2016, Ruby Bridges is alive and well, and still residing in New Orleans. As a child during the 1960s, she became a civil rights icon when federal marshals escorted her to a formerly all-white school in New Orleans. The action inspired Norman Rockwell to create one of his most famous paintings: "The Problem We All Live With."
