Some African American leaders, such as Booker T. Washington, promoted efforts to aid African Americans. In 1905 Du Bois and other African Americans committed to immediate action met at Niagara falls, Canada. Calling themselves the Niagara Movement, the group demanded economic and educational equality, as well as an end to segregation and discrimination. Another important organization, the National Urban League, was formed in 1911. This group helped African Americans- particularly those moving from the South to northern cities- find jobs and housing and adjust to a new life in an urban environment.
