It was an awful way for them to live. The White people lived in the largest houses in the suburbs with there luxury fitted kitchens and washing machines, refrigerators, and much more. However, the blacks found it hard to get jobs as white people wouldn't employ them. In the early 1950's there was segregation in almost everything including schools. They were supposedly separate but equal but of course this was untrue. All white schools flourished with books and equipment whereas an all black school had almost nothing. This was another reason why they couldn't get jobs: not being able to read or write.
