There is some confusion regarding where bongos originated from. There is evidence and documentation that the bongo's first use was in Cuba in the 19th century. A similar smaller drum of slightly different construction called a Tbilat has been in use in North Africa since the 12th century.

Bongo drums are thought to have originated in Cuba - the first recorded instance of the drums was documented in 19th century Cuba. A similar drum, however, was created in 12th century Africa.
