John Brown (May 9, 1800-December 2, 1859) opposed the slave holding practices of the Southern states in the 19th century.
Specifically, he was such a fervent abolitionist that he supported and practiced violent means to end slavery. He carried out his beliefs to such an extent that his actions contributed to the anguished crisis of a "bleeding" Kansas reeling from violent clashes for and against slavery. For example, he was responsible for the deaths of pro-slavery Southerners in the Pottawatomie Massacre of May 1856.
Brown then carried out his beliefs in what is now West Virginia, but was then Virginia. For example, he led a raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry, in 1859. The result was a count of seven dead and more than ten injured. For that raid, Brown ultimately was captured, tried and hanged.
Brown was involved in several events. He went to Kansas when the Kansas-Nebraska act was voted on and with his sons he murdered several people. Then, later he took over Harpers Ferry and tried to start a slave rebellion. He thought if he gave local slaves weapons from the armory they would kill their slave masters. He was wrong and was hung by the Union army for his deeds. He may have been insane.
