He did not want the Continental Army to overthrow the government out of spite for delaying their pensions that were promised beacuse that could throw the entire government out of balance. He did not want the army to be the cuase of their own demise, bringing America into political choas and destroying everything the Americans had just faught for- Representative Government. By overtaking the government it would defeat the entire purpose of the Revolutionary War they that had just faught so courageously and persistently in.
