Cultural differences.
the idea that political power comes from a Supreme Being
Technology was not widely accepted by the Plains Indians because they had a different belief system. While Europeans embraced growing technological trends, the natives followed more of spiritual approach to progress. This created a culture gap that impeded their progress.
The two cultures were very different, but three of the reasons appear below:1. Most white settlers were Christian, native Americans weren't2. Native Americans were usually more prepared for Midwest winters than the newer white settlers (survived more gruel-some winters than whites with stocking up on food, clothing, etc.)3. Many native Americans preferred to live and sleep outside during the the spring, summer, and fall while the white settlers depended on their houses for mostly all their shelters
During Jamestown's first year of being a settlement, only 60 of the original settlers survived. John Smith then took matters into his own hands when he saw the numbers dwindling and brought them back up with the discovery of the cash crop: tobacco. With tobacco, more and more settlers arrived with the desire of growing tobacco crops and owning land beyond belief.
a belief in personal responsibility for salvation
Indians were seen as necessary to missions by European settlers and missionaries due to the belief that they needed to be converted to Christianity and "civilized" according to European standards. This was often driven by a combination of religious, economic, and political factors. Additionally, the presence of Indigenous peoples offered opportunities for the establishment of trade networks and alliances.
Some Indians routinely took the people left alive after a raid on other tribal nations as slaves, and probably did the same with attacks on European settlers. Also, after many Indian nations were decimated by white man's diseases, some probably captured female settlers in an attempt to keep their nation alive through intermarriage.
