Pawnee villages were composed of earth lodges. These were semi-subterranean structures with large wooden posts supporting a circular roof covered with branches, thatch and turves, all encased in a coating of waterproof clay. From the outside they looked like huge igloos of mud. The Pawnee used tipis only for temporary hunting camps at certain times of year - their permanent villages were entirely of earth lodges.
