kind of... at first we went to annex it by asking (telling) the leader of Hawaii that we were going to annex them, but they said no, so we came back later ( like 6 months to a year) with battle ships and army and threatened them. They then let us annex them :)

The United States did not annex Cuba for a few reasons. On the surface the official reason was because they did not want to appear to be like an imperialist European power. Although, the US people were also repelled to let Cuba join them due the Latino/Spanish heritage of the state. Also, with the US Civil War still fresh, many were weary about having a state that held a populations that was 1/3 black or mixed. The US still bought Cuba from Spain and exploited Cuba for awhile without annexing the country as an official state with US liberties.
