Volunteers in Service to America. It was founded in 1965 to be a domestic "Peace Corps." It is now called AmericCorps VISTA and is a federal program to fight poverty. When it was first started, citizens would volunteer, be trained, and then agree to spend a certain amount of time in an economically depressed area of the nation to help the people living there. It consisted of teachers, construction workers, health workers, etc.
