Why did native American tribes invent hand signals?

"Hand signals?" - you mean sign language, which involves other parts of the body as well as the hands. Tribes each spoke their own languages, so communication even between neighbouring groups would be impossible without the use of sign language. Even the tribes in the Iroquois league each spoke a different language, for example. The sign language of the Great Plains became very useful in interactions with white traders, government agents and in arranging treaties, although interpreters also helped. An example of a sign from the Plains sign language is the term for blanket: both fists, facing yourself, are held in front of the shoulders, then move the right fist left and the left fist right so the wrists cross over with the right hand nearest the body. The sign for bear is to either hold the partly closed hands each side of the head, representing the bear's ears; or do this then add a clawing motion with both hands in front of the body.
