Bodiam castle is near Robertsbridge, East Sussex. It was built (starting in 1385) for Sir Edward Dalyngrigge as a defensive site in case of invasion by the French during the Hundred Years War.
During the Wars of the Roses the then owner, Sir Thomas Lewknor, a supporter of the Lancastrians, is believed to have surrendered the castle to the Yorkists without a fight, probably in 1483.
During the English Civil War Bodiam Castle was owned by John Tufton, a Royalist supporter. Tufton sold the castle in 1644 to help pay fines levied against him by Parliament. The castle was subsequently dismantled and left as a partial ruin.
In 1829 John Fuller began restoration of the castle, which ended up as the property of Lord Curzon who left it to the National Trust on his death in 1925.
