Because they wanted to explore new territory and get rid of the Europeans and English men. They wanted to create new towns, new jobs, expand rail roads for trade and to ship goods and people. To take the Mississippi River so they can travel over to the other end and to take control or the land and pay for it o have more states which are added on to the 13 colonies. The Westward expansion was a great idea I believe. :)

The westward expansion occurred in the United States because the east was becoming overcrowded. People started leaving the east in the early 1800's because they did not want to become involved in the problems between North and South about slavery. After the Civil War ended, the industrial revolution began. This was a time of great Immigration to the United States from other countries.

The eastern part of the US was never overcrowded. The move westward was for pioneers to take advantage of Federal land grants. The transcontinental railroad was also a factor in US westward movements. The 1849 gold rush in California was another reason why people went there for the prospect of gaining wealth.

One cause of westward expansion was manifest destiny, the idea that American were supposed to take the land. also, the Homestead Act, and the gold rush of 1848 were more reasons.
