US airpower, largely in the form of the B-52 bombers, was the PRIMARY weapon that could destroy and discourage the North Vietnamese Army. When the US withdrew from Vietnam, the South Vietnamese may have had somewhat of a chance of continuing the war...successfully. But when our airpower withdrew, especially the B-52's, all bets were off. With no devastating bombers to stop them, the NVA army rolled south in tanks, and over-ran the South Vietnamese capital, actually driving their tanks into the front lawn!
