A demographic collapse is the terminology used for the radical change of a peoples culture or even a radical change of the number of people in a certain society. Here is an example. New World explorers and settlers brought many new diseases to the Native American populations. Diseases that many Europeans did not cause a mass "plague" if you will on themselves. However, the Native American populations had never had to deal with smallpox, measles, chickenpox, whooping cough, typhus, typhoid fever, and the list goes on & on.

The result of these had a devastating affect on American Natives and weakened immensely their ability to hold off major European incursions into Tribal lands. This became in many areas a demographic collapse of the indigenous populations. The ecological & total environmental impacts of the deaths of such large numbers of people caused the abandonment of their settlements and farmlands. The land reverted back to jungles & forests and the demographic scenery was altered to the point of collapse.

The demographic collapse of the indigenous population of Latin America was primarily caused by diseases such as smallpox, measles, and influenza brought over by European explorers and settlers.
