The term "frontier mentality" is usually associated with the pioneers of the Western expansion of the United States during the 19th century. The US frontier was an unsettled environment in which the rule of law was weak and coexisted with heavily armed communities. Violence was common, as guns were frequently used to settle disputes. Out of this environment grew the ideal of power and freedom embodied in rugged individual who use force to tame an "uncivilized" world and thereby obtain what they need and protect what they have. Frontier mentality nowadays refers to an attitude that favors force over dialogue, disregards the needs of sustainability since the frontier always advances in this imaginary, and emphasizes self-reliance.
