Spingarn, SPIHN gahrn, Medal is an annual award that was instituted by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1914. The award was named for Joel Elias Spingarn, who was then chairman of the NAACP's board of directors. Gold medals are given each year to the black American who reached the highest achievement in his or her field in the previous year or over a period of time.
