The cougar has many names in English: it is also known as a puma, mountain lion, panther, mountain cat, catamount and wildcat. The name puma comes straight from the Inca language (Quechua), where it is called poma. Cougar itself probably comes from the Tupi language of Brazil.

In North America just some of the native names are:

Cheyenne..........................nanose'hame (mightiest of all animals)

Arapaho.............................bexóókee

Blackfoot............................omakatyo

Navajo................................nashdoitsoh

Nahuatl (Aztec)...................miztli

Ojibwe................................bagwaji-gaazhag

Mahican..............................bsoh or bezo

Lakota................................igmu'watogla

Crow..................................iishbii

Hidatsa..............................itupaictia

Sahaptin (Yakama).............xwayawi

I am a Mohawk Lakota woman and your question doesn't make sense. Cougar means the same thing to us as it does to other cultures. it is a large wild cat. Also know as a Puma or Mountain Lion.
