the history books (but they don't dress like what you see , they dress like everyone else and they are not savages either) The reason people think they are the same thing is because, they believe what Columbus said. Back then Columbus landed in the indies and called the people there (which were native Americans) Indians.

Native Americans, depending on political beliefs, normally prefer one set of terms over another - this is highly dependent on the individual.
