I'm not sure but i think that what led to the development of a two-party system was the differences between Jefferson and Hamilton.

The two party system had a really complex development, but part of it was that with more than two, the person who got the most votes could be overturned by a collaboration of two other parties. This is normal and healthy and accepted in many countries, but in the US it was seen as low and dirty, and many people have worked to not allow that to happen again. There are still many parties that can run in the US, but It is always a threat in any three part (or more) contest, because someone will bow out and, if popular, can determine the winner by asking followers to choose one candidate over the other, so many people discourage it.
