Abraham Lincoln was a great leader that could handle the stress and sadness of the Civil War. He was able to be compassionate towards the African Americans and the Southerners that fought against the Union.
Reading the text books-growing up in middle America the answer was he was one of the greatest presidents.
He freed the slaves, he was a strong moral leader during the civil war, died a hero due to an assassin's bullet.
Coming from Virginia, I have learned in recent years that he was a very complicated man.
1. He forced the south into war.
2. Suspended civil liberties.
3. Could have freed the slaves sooner.
4. Led a wild life in his early days.
History judges him better than his own time. Some see him as a tyrant but I see him as a necessary part of why America is America today. There had to be a break with the past of slavery and the old south, Abe was it.
But remember the Civil War was not just about slavery. Let's face it, the majority of the population did not care about slaves. Most of the taxes from tariffs from the south who had to import everything manufactured went to improve the infrastructure of the north. Then the only commodity that the south had was cheap labor -slaves.
The north punished the south -Sherman's March to the Sea was an act of that today would land in in jail for crimes against humanity.
Without Lincoln, there might be a different outcome to the war.
Abraham Lincoln did not like any kind of games. He was little bit interested in painting. He always wanted to go to school as he was very much interested in studies.

It seems to me that when I studied history that Abe was referred to as a male.
