The emotive reactions to the Fugitive Slave Act that allowed runaway slaves to be hunted down by official slave-catchers and returned to their owners.

This gave the runaways a dramatic image of victimhood, especially after the publication of 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' which soon followed.

The Compromise of 1850 brought the debate on the Northwestern territories to a climax. California would be entered as a free state. New Mexico and Utah were allowed to use a popular vote to decide whether or not they would be slave or free. The Republic of Texas gave up some of the lands they had claimed and received $10 million to pay its debt to Mexico. The slave trade was formally abolished in the District of Columbia. The Fugitive Slave Act obligated to help slavers capture runaway slaves or pay a fine. This was the most controversial part of the Compromise and resulted in an upswing of abolitionist activism.

Strong public resentment of the Fugitive Slave Act, which turned ordinary citizens into unpaid slave-catchers. Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' as a protest against it. This aroused a lot of Abolitionist feeling in the North.
