The traditional homelands of the Choctaws were in central Mississippi and Alabama west of the Tombigbee river.

Other tribes seem to have been closely associated with the Choctaws: the Napochi of Black Warrior river, the Houma and Bayagoula of Louisiana, the Chackchiuma of the Yazoo river and the Mobile and Pensacola of north-east Florida.
