In 1960s, Latinos began to demand equal rights and respect. one such group was Mexican American farm workers. Cesar Chavez was the group's leader. In 1962, he helped establish the national farm workers association. In 1966, Chavez merged this group with a Filipino agricultural union. Together they formed the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee(UFWOC) California's grape growers refused to recognized the farm workers union. As a result, Chavez called for a nationwide boycott of grapes.

What was the significance of the Mexican-American War?
It resulted in a major territorial gain for the US (the Mexican Cession in 1848) that completed its expansion from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast. It meant an increase of US territory (California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico, as well as parts of Wyoming, Colorado, Oklahoma and Kansas) at the expense of Mexico. It also renewed the slavery question for the acquired territories, and therefore ultimately contributed to the American Civil War.
