Zuni hunters used bows, arrows, spears and war clubs. Zuni tools included wooden hoes and rakes for farming, spindles and looms for weaving and pump drills for boring holes.

The Zapotecs, like the Mixtecs, used very small round shields, the atlatl (dart-thrower), slings, stone-headed or copper-headed axes and clubs fitted with obsidian teeth.

The atlatl was the main weapon - a wooden stick about 24 inches (61 cms) long, grooved and notched to take a javelin or dart. Some could take two missiles at once. A man could throw a dart with 60 per cent more power and accuracy using an atlatl than without.

Slings were used by the peasantry; they were apparently exceptionally accurate with small pebbles flung with these weapons.

Zuni and Hopi hunters used oak wood throwing sticks or rabbitsticks (puskoho), much like a boomerang but with an integral carved handle. They were painted with short red and black lines and were very effective in taking down small game animals and birds up to the size of prairie dogs and even coyotes.

Bows and war clubs were the main weapons in warfare. Zuni war arrows were always engraved with grooves running along the length of the arrow; the tool used was the tooth of a cougar.
