Jephthah lived in the Gilead area and was a member of the Tribe of Menasheh. Before going out to war he vowed that were he to be victorious he would sacrifice the first thing that would come out of his to home to meet him. After his victory his daughter came out to meet him. Whether she was sacrificed or held in solitude for the rest of her life is a matter of dispute.
