The Cree were a very widely-dispersed group of hunting bands extending from the Plains area of Saskatchewan to the woodlands of central Maitoba, northern Ontario and eastwards to Hudson's Bay. The area occupied was greater than any other native American tribe.

Their neighbours were the Blackfoot tribes, the Assiniboin (or Hohe), the Ojibwe and (to the north) the Chipewyan.
