He was poor and did not get much formal education; his mother died when he was only nine and his family had to move a few times. He also lost one of his younger brothers, who died in infancy. His father remarried and young Abe seems to have gotten along well with his step-mom, but his childhood was certainly difficult. He had a great desire to study, and taught himself, since he did not attend school for more than a couple of years. He was hard-working, apprenticing himself to people who could teach him. He was also known for being honest (this is not a myth: newspapers of his time did in fact refer to his honesty). But based on what we know of his early years, he had little time to play-- he helped his father build a new log cabin, he worked in the field planting crops, and the one thing he loved to do when he was not working was to borrow books and read them.

Abraham Lincoln was born on Feb. 12, 1809, in a log cabin on a farm in Hardin County, Ky. His father had come with his parents from Virginia and had grown to manhood on the Kentucky frontier. He had evidently become moderately successful as a farmer and carpenter, for in 1803 he was able to pay £118 cash for a farm near Elizabethtown. Three years later he married Nancy Hanks, described as "intelligent, deeply religious, kindly, and affectionate," but as "illiterate" as himself. Of her family and background little authentic is known.

=== Lincoln's childhood was rough. His mother died when he was nine years old so he did not do much with his dad so it was like he was all alone in some some kind of way. His family moved several times; from Kentucky, where he was born, to Indiana, and then on to Illinois in his early 20s. After he arrived in Illinois, he had no interest in being a farmer and instead started splitting rails and clearing his father's farm. Then he enlisted in the Black Hawk War (a fight to move the Indians westward) as a volunteer. He was elected to lead his company of soldiers. He later admitted that this gave him more satisfaction than any election he had ever won. After the Black Hawk War, Lincoln did a number of different things. He also did not have any friends! (sad right?)

He was a manual labourer (rail-splitter) and an unofficial small-town peacekeeper - being twice the size of anyone else.

He was living in a boarding house, where one of the other young men was a law student.

The two of them spent hours engaged in legal debates, and soon the student told Lincoln that he had the makings of a great lawyer.

Under that encouragement, he studied law and eventually became qualified.
