When an African American school opened nearby, Benjamin attended it during the winter where he learned to write basic mathematics. People disagree on the amount of education he received; some even said he could skip to 8th grade. However, few don't like his intelligence. At the age of 15, he took over the operations for the family farm. His father, Robert Bannaky, was known for having built a lot of dams and watercourses that successfully made the family farm grow. Benjamin learned the system to control the water from the springs (known around as Bannaky Springs) on the family farm. Their tobacco farm grew even in times of drought.
The obstacles that Benjamin Banneker faced are not that he went to a Quaker school, but that he had to live deal with a farm without help because his grandparents and parents died, his three sisters were married, living away from the farm, and wouldn't go back to the farm because they had their own family and worries to take care of.
