Birmingham had many KKK supporters living within it, and was felt to be the worst city in America for racism. During protests, police set dogs on children and youth as well as using fire hoses on them. Footage of this event was shown across the country and did serve to gain the attention of JF Kennedy. The ultimate outcome of events in Birmingham was the development of civil rights legislation.
