The relatively small Algonquin (or Algonkin) tribe lived (and still live) in many separate bands along the Ottawa river valley and along the Gatineau River in Quebec, Canada.

This area is generally dry and humid with around 200 frost-free days per year. Winter temperatures can reach an extreme minimum of -36 degrees, with maximum summer temperatures of about 35 degrees, but usually these are from -15 to 26 degrees. On average there are 105 days of rain and 45 days of snow giving around 187 cms of snow and 80 cms of rain. Prevailing winds are from the west.

Many people today incorrectly refer to other Algonquian tribes as "Algonquin", particularly in the USA - this is the result of insufficient knowledge of the subject.
