The first successful colony planted in what became known as New England was the Plymouth Colony in 1620. This colony was founded at Plymouth Rock in what is now Massachusetts by the Pilgrims from the Mayflower. The colony existed until 1691 when it was absorbed into the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

The oldest existing political entity is Massachusetts which was founded as the Massachusetts Bay Colony at present day Boston in 1630.
