Georgia in1943

New York state set the voting age at 18 years old in 1865. At that time, it applied only to white males. The 15th Amendment to the US Constitution, ratified in 1870, prohibited the denial of suffrage based on race, color, or condition of previous servitude.

And the 19th Amendment, ratified in 1920, gave women the right to vote as well.

The Twenty-sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution allowed citizens age eighteen to vote. This amendment was adopted on July 1, 1971. The reasoning was if men could be drafted to fight in Vietnam, they should be able to vote too.

How did Lincoln's plan for reconstruction compare to Johnsons plan?

The main difference was that Lincoln wanted to have everyone free (someone please edit this to say more on Lincoln's plan) but Johnson wanted to give every state the choice on what to do with their freed slaves. Johnson didn't let any African American occupy a government position, nor did he let them vote. He even said "This is a country for white men, and by God, as long as I am President, it shall be a government for white men."

What are 2 long term trends that have characterized the history of suffrage in the u.s.?

1. Originally the right to vote was only permitted to 1) property owners or 2) those that were educated. So the government only wanted voters to be people that had "a piece of the pie" So people, like women or African Americans, were not allowed to vote because they didn't own anything and were uneducated. Also women and blacks had different views and ideas which made the government want to not give them the right o vote because of how it would affect the country; people do not like change. So trends that characterized the history of suffrage where aspects like having money, owning land and having an education.
