it ended on may 10.1869. i should know i spend 5hours reaserching on it! :) :] It actually was completed in 1873 with the bridge over the Missouri river between Council Bluffs, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska. Prior to that they would have to stop and ferry the passengers and freight over the river.

May 10, 1869 was when they drove the golden spike when the tracks met in Utah
