Summary of Accomplishments: Abraham Lincoln is known for many things, most being his amazing ability to run the union in a time of civil war. Although not an abolitionist he opposed slavery. But if it meant to keep slavery and to keep the Union together he would. On January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect. This was Lincoln's declaration of freedom for all slaves that were not under the Unions control. Also, on November 19, 1863, Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address which dedicated the battlefield there to the soldiers who had died. Some people say that this was the best speech of all time. During the civil war Abraham Lincoln served 2 terms but was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth who was an actor. As our 16th President Lincoln showed amazing leadership and decision making skills.
