Southerners of European descent had long thought of people of African descent as being racially inferior, which was why they felt justified in enslaving such people and treating them as domestic animals rather than as people. When the slaves were freed as a result of the Civil War and the subsequent constitutional amendment, these white Southerners did not wish to give up the position of social superiority to which they considered themselves entitled. Therefore, violence and terror were used to prevent African-Americans from assuming a position of social equality.

There were instances where white people in restaurants verbally confronted and heckled peaceful protesters during the civil rights movement. In some cases, they resorted to physical violence, throwing objects or physically assaulting the protesters. These actions were intended to intimidate and suppress the demonstrations for racial equality.
A peaceful protest is simply a demonstration of a belief without violence. Picketing is one of the most common, as is a petition.

To meet violence with no violence means to react to violent acts by peaceful problem solving techniques. This techniques include peaceful protests and sit-ins.

People can get hurt or killed. People may be breaking the law by engaging in violence. People can make their point without resorting to violence. Violence can often undermine a protest as the protesters will be accused of being bad people and so their protest is not valid. It gives those they are protesting against something to use against the protesters. So for these and other reasons there should not be violence at protests.
