The 9-1-1 national emergency number became available in the United States in 1968. Most people didn't really know of the number until the 1970s, and there were some areas that didn't have active service until the mid to late 1980s.

Congress instituted the emergency call system in 1967. The first call was by Rankin Fite, an Alabama state senator in February of 1968. Alaska followed shortly after.
