Madam Walker, whose birth name was Sarah Breedlove, worked in cotton fields as a child and teenager. She began working as a washerwoman doing other people's laundry at a time when most Americans did not have electricity, indoor Plumbing or washing machines and dryers. She continued working as a washerwoman and sometimes as a cook during her twenties and thirties until she began selling hair care products and founded her own company.
