The surrender of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia to U.S. Grant at Appomattox on April 9th 1865.

From this point, the war was deemed to be effectively over, although Joe Johnston had not yet surrendered to Sherman, and the Confederacy was not officially signed-off for another few weeks.

There were other small skirmishes in the West for a while. Also a number of Confederate Generals went into hiding and were not officially pardoned for some years, if at all.
