Only Susan B. Anthony's speech on suffrage was made in court. It came on June 18, 1873 at the end of her trial at the Ontario County Courthouse in Canandaigua, New York.
Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906)
On November 18, 1872, Anthony was arrested by a U.S. Deputy Marshal for voting illegally in the 1872 Presidential Election two weeks earlier on November 5. She had written to Elizabeth Cady Stanton that she intended to register and vote in spite of the current law, which did not recognize the right of women to vote.
On June 17, 1873, the trial judge was Ward Hunt, who had just been appointed as an associate justice of the US Supreme Court. He prevented Anthony from testifying in her own defense (which was improper but could never be appealed). He also directed the jury to return a verdict of guilty. The following day she was to be sentenced. Although interrupted several times by the judge, Anthony presented a stirring speech on the right of US women to the same freedoms and privileges as men. She was sentenced to pay a $100 fine but was not jailed. She never paid the fine, and the government never tried to force her to pay. It was not until the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920 that all US women finally gained the right to vote.
