There are several candidates for the President that changed the US the most. George Washington was the first President and established many precedents that holders of the executive office continue to recognize today. Lincoln is considered by many historians as, perhaps, the greatest President we have had. He led the nation through the dark days of the Civil War and preserved the Union. Teddy Roosevelt introduced the US to the world and we never looked back. From the days of TR, we were an economic and military power in world affairs. FDR and the New Deal increased the size of the federal government and introduced the powers of the government into the daily lives of the citizens. Many feel that Ronald Reagan should be credited with ending the Cold War. Nixon proved how powerful and dangerous a strong executive could become if the powers of that office were not held in check. His administration reaffirmed the importance of the Checks and Balances in the Constitution.
