I would say the most important(and positive) thing that happened to Carter was the Camp David Peace Accords during his Presidency. These Peace Accords required Israel to leave Sinai and in return Egypt would recognize Israel. The most important negative thing that happened to Carter would probably be the failure to secure the release of hostages in Iran.
