Reformers were able to improve city life by creating settlement homes and the Salvation Army. The settlement homes were very rare and immigrants would try to find room in them to be able to assimilate and start their new American life. Also, the Salvation Army like the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) helped the poor living in the harsh city conditions. They were able to provide simple necesities like food and water along with classes, sports, and group dances. This allowed people to enjoy life a little bit more and ignore the filth and the poverty.
