It is thought that Tsakakawia was captured by a Hidatsa (Minnetaree) war party when she was about 11 years old. They took her back to their village on the upper Missouri where she would have been treated as a slave. It was the Hidatsas who gave her the name Tsakakawia (Bird Woman), which Lewis and Clark wrote as Sacagawea.
