Abraham Lincoln's true love was said to be a young woman , by the name of Ann Rutledge.

During 1833-1834, Lincoln had stayed at the family farm of James Rutledge, in New Salem, Illinois, as a border. Ann was living with he family but was engaged to a young man, John McNamar, who had been in New York on an extended family visit.

Lincoln liked Ann, and her entire family. After spending some time, together, it was apparent the two had feelings for one another.

In August of 1835, Ann died suddenly from malaria, or Typhoid Fever. Lincoln was grievously affected by her death, and often told friends that his heart was buried in Ann's grave. He also fell into a deep depression, where he left New Salem for a few months, and recovered by staying at a good friend's family plantation in Kentucky (he stayed with Joshua Speed.), shortly after Ann died.

Ann's brother, Robert said that Ann had planned to break her engagement from McNamar, had she not died, suddenly.

Years later, Lincoln told a few people that he truly loved Ann, and thought of her often, even later in life, and thought she would have made a good wife.
Anne Rutledge who died, then Mary Todd whom he married.
