First, there are several different groups that share a common name yet believe very different things. There are some Black Hebrew Israelites who are Christians and who believe that Jesus was the promised messiah; they worship him as their savior, and follow both the traditions of the Old Testament and the theology of the New Testament. One of the best-known groups from this tradition is the Israelite Church of God in Jesus Christ.

Then, there are others, sometimes called African Hebrew Israelites, who do not worship Jesus. This group believes they are descendants of one of the lost tribes of Israel and members practice a version of religion that they believe is closest to what the ancient Israelites believed; they do not consider themselves Jewish, nor do they align with Christianity, and they believe Israel is meant to be their holy land, where all who worship the One God should live, work, and worship.

And then, there are some Black Hebrews (also called Black Jews) who believe Judaism is the true religion of black people and who practice a modern form of Judaism that is somewhere between Conservative and Orthodox. Some have converted to Judaism, while others were born into the Jewish faith. By some population estimates, there are about 150,000 Black Jews in the United States: their most famous member is probably Chicago rabbi Capers Funnyé (pronounced fah-NAY), who is Michelle Obama's cousin.
