Invented by Eli Whitney, who happened to be staying on a friend's plantation and thought that picking cotton was an awful lot of work and a machine ought to be able to do it quicker than slaves. Whitney patented the gin on patented the cotton gin on March 14 1794. The opatent office only granted him a ten-year monopoly, and anyway the machine was so simple that it had already been copied throughout the South, and Whitney did not make his fortune.
