Most kids were taught by their parents(only essential skills needed for life), only higher class kids were taught in school. Girls weren't allowed to go to school, they worked at home on house skills. Going to college was a rare thing.

Were there books in Colonial America?

Yes, they did. Education has always been important in the US. The Bible was used by many families as the primary tool for teaching the children and schools opened early in the colonies. The Boston Latin school was one of the early schools established in 1635. It was the first town supported school and established the local control over education. The first reading books were published at this time and so were books on writing/penmanship. Children were also taught math skills. It was felt that an educated population would preserve democracy. Books were expensive and most school children used a 'horn book' for the first part of their schooling. It was a piece of wood with a thin sheet of cow horn, thin enough to be seen through, that protected a sheet of paper that was printed with the alphabet, numbers and usually several passages from the Bible.

Why were HBCU's started?

They were started for Black kids (and even adults who didn't have an education) because they were not allowed to attend other schools. The first Black community colleges were designed to help freed slaves to develop the necessary skills needed for living in the free world. In that time period, they were called "normal schools."
